Special message to participants from Chief Referee Lisa Landon:

For the 2011 Star of the North figure skating competition, we are NOT following the rule change for the Juvenile/Open Juvenile age change – Juvenile is still 12 and under – since the entry deadline was prior to June 1. We WILL follow the new well-balanced rules for the UNRESTRICTED events that went into effect on June 1 since all the well-balanced element sheets for 2011/2012 have been updated and published on the USFS website.

FIGURE SKATING REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED.

Cost:

$80 by May 11; $100 after May 11

Entries received after May 27 accepted only if space remains; no guarantees

USFS sanctioned and ISI endorsed.

Competition Format

Events offered will consist of Limited and Open Free Skating, Compulsory/Short Program, and Showcase/Spotlight.  State Games, at its option, may require a minimum of three competitors for an event to take place.  Levels in solo events with more than 10 entries may be divided by age.

The 2011 Star of the North Games is a qualifying competition for the 2013 State Games of America National Championship (SGA) in Hershey-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. At SGA, skaters may enter each event that they qualified for by placing first, second or third at the Star of the North Games, but they may not enter both a restricted and unrestricted free skate event. The State Games of America figure skating competition includes some events not part of the Star of the North Games program. For specific information on eligibility for those events, please contact the SGA office directly.

Eligibility

An eligible person in skating who is not a member of the United States Figure Skating  (USFS) may enter the figure skating events of State Games which are recognized by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), the National Congress of State Games and sanctioned by the USFS if otherwise eligible to do so.  (USFS Rule:  SGCR3.01)

This competition is open to all eligible skaters who live, attend school, or whose home club is in Minnesota.  This competition will be governed by the official rules of the USFS.  Members of the USFS must be in good standing.  Members of the ISI must be members in good standing.  If participants are members of both the ISI and USFS, the skater must list on the application the levels of achievement for both, and the skater must skate at the highest level achieved from either.

The entry deadline is May 27, 2011, however due to ice-time limitations, the competition may fill prior to the deadline.  Entries will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis.  Athletes accepted will be notified by a confirmation letter.  Athletes on a waiting list will be notified by phone, e-mail or letter as soon as possible.

Judging

USFS ordinal scoring method with separate marks for Technical Merit and Presentation.  Judging will be by certified USFS judges for all events.

Music

Skaters must provide their own music for all Free Skating and Artistic events.  There will be no music for Compulsory events through Juvenile level.  Intermediate through Senior Short Program will be as set forth in the USFS Competitions Standards SSR 3.00.  Vocal music is permitted.  CD’s only will be permitted, and each CD must be properly marked with skater’s name and event.  The Star of the North State Games will make every effort to protect your music, but will not be responsible for individual CD’s.  Competitors should have duplicate CD’s with them.  CD’s must be picked up at the end of the skaters’ event. Any CD’s left at the end of the competition will not be returned.

Governing Body

This will be a USFS sanctioned event (sanction pending), and is endorsed by the ISI, but membership in USFS and/or ISI is not required.  Registered members of USFS and ISI must be in good standing. USFS and ISI members must include their USFS and/or ISI numbers with their registration form.

Adult Participation

Adults 19 years and older will compete in separate events in all divisions unless they choose to compete with skaters under 19 years of age.  The choice to compete with younger skaters must be so indicated in a letter accompanying their entry.

Awards

Star of the North Games medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division. Medal winners in selected events at the 2011 Star of the North Games will earn an invitation to the 2011 State Games of America National Championship (SGA) in Hershey-Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
